I was watching TV the other night and saw this interesting effect. You
might have seen this commercial where they bring text onto the screen where
the letters start out small then they grow larger as the line curls across
the screen and they fade in at the beginning and at the end of the curl.
Well, I figured there must be a way to do this with Lightwave so here
it is.
Place the drawer "Flying-text" into your 3D drawer. My system is set up
as DH0:toaster/3d etc., if yours is set up differently you won't have to go
far to find the objects and images the scene file asks for.
There are two scene files, Flying-text.scn and Scrolling-text.scn. The
Flying-text.scn shows three different curls with a test frame of an image
sequence that you will create using the scene file Scrolling-text.scn which
shows you how to set up your text. Basicly you need to create whatever text
you want and make an animation of the text scrolling straight across the
screen and save the frames to map onto the curl objects. Notice in this scene
that the foreground and alpha images use a fade image to make your text fade
at the beginning and the end of the frame.
The objects were created in reverse as to how you normally create morph
objects in that I first created the curved object and then straightened it out
In modeler create points to create your curve object. Look at the curve object I
created to get an idea. You can create any shape that suits your purpose.
Now create spline curves for the top bottom and sides. Using the patch tool
create a spline patch. Save this as your morph target.
Now to straighten out your object use the Set Val in the tools menu by
selecting the points on the top edge of the object and moving them up. Do this
on each line of points until you've straightened your curve. Save this as your
source object.
You can make the color of the text in the Flying-text scene anything you
like, even put a texture or image map on it. I use transparacy mapping instead
of clip mapping because you can't antialias the image in clip mapping to get
a clean edge on your text. Because of this you can't use shadow mapping.
If you use a black or white background you can key this on top of live
video or another animation.
If you have any problems with this just leave me a message.
Happy Scrolling,
